Engines can overheat for any number of reasons. Unfortunately, you might not notice until the temperature gauge starts climbing as you're driving. Pulling over and turning off the engine is the best route, but what if you need to get to a safe spot? One trick you may have heard of is turning on your car heater. Can this actually help?
Knowing what to look out for means you can cool off your engine as soon as possible and avoid damaging it further. Most cars have a temperature gauge in the dashboard and all have a warning light in case of overheating. Other signs are steam from under the hood and strange odors.
Turning on your car's heater might seem odd, but it actually does help. Make sure the air conditioner isn't running and stressing the engine, then turn the heat up as high as you can. It will pull hot air from the engine and help it cool down. In some cases, this could be enough to stop the overheating until you get home or to our auto repair shop.
As soon as you can get to a safe place, park and turn off your engine. It will continue heating up as long as it's running. If you have roadside
assistance give them a call. Don't try to open the hood yourself, though. Everything in the engine compartment will be incredibly hot and you risk being sprayed with liquid or steam. Wait at least 15 minutes for things to cool off. If you have coolant with you, carefully top it off once you're able.
These tips will help you get your car somewhere safe, but they don't fix the underlying issue that caused the overheating in the first place. Get your car in for service as soon as possible. Waiting and pushing the engine harder could mean more costly repairs. If you need engine repair, don't hesitate to give Worth It Automotive a call today!
